It measures the expected price change of the option given a $1 change in the underlying.Call options have a delta between 0 and 1.Put options have a delta between 0 and -1.Assume a call option has a delta of 0.50, this indicates that for every $1 move in the underlying stock, the option price will change by $0.50.If a call option has a delta of 0.20, the option price will change by $0.20 for every $1 move.Using an example of XYZ stock trading at $50. A 6 month $50 call option is trading at $4.50 and has a delta of 0.50.The next day, if XYZ rises to $51, the price of the option will have risen to $5.Note that this example ignores any changes due to Vega, Gamma and Theta, the other main option greeks.Using a live example from March 9th, 2017 when AAPL was trading at $139.04.The April 21st $140 call option has a delta of 0.4667 and is trading at $2.62.If AAPL rises $1 tomorrow, the price of the $140 call option will rise to $3.09. Again, this assumes no change in an other variable such as volatility and time to expiry.Put options always have negative delta. If XYZ is trading at $50 and a 6 month $50 put option is trading at $5 with a delta of -0.50, a 1$ move up in the stock will see the $50 put decline to $4.50.Again using AAPL on March Get Delta Volume Analysis Trading Course or the other courses from the same one of these categories: Fulcrumtrader, Delta Volume, Analysis, Trading, Course for free on Cloud Download. 2025-04-159th, 2017, the $140 put has a delta of -0.5354 and is trading at $3.40.A $1 move up in AAPL will see the $140 put decline to $2.86.I can honestly say, I’ve never once calculated an options delta manually. There are so many tools out there these days that there really is no need to know how the Black Scholes model works.By all means, dig in to it if you’re a bit of a math geek, but it’s not essential knowledge for successful option trading.I have an excel calculator that you can download below if you like. Just plug in the underlying price, the strike price, risk free rate, implied volatility level, dividend yield and time to expiry and you will get the value of the option as well as all the greek values. The 3 most important factors when calculating an options delta are the underlying price, the strike price and the time to expiry. An important concept to understand is that as expiration approaches, the delta of out-of-the-money options will rapidly approach zero.Less time to expiry, means less chance those out-of-the-money options will end up in the money. Therefore, they have a lower delta. This is illustrated in the image below:I won’t delve into too much detail on gamma in this article, but it’s important to know that delta and gamma are closely related.Gamma measures how much the delta will change given a $1 move in the underlying. If delta is the “speed” at which option prices change, you can think of gamma as the “acceleration.”You can learn more about gamma here.An option with a gamma of +0.05 will see its delta increase by 0.05 for every $1 move in the underlying.Option delta can change when implied volatility changes.Changes in implied volatility will affect out-of-the-money and in-the-money options more than the at-the-money options. If a stock is trading at $50 and has implied volatility of 15%, a 6 month $60 call option might have a delta of 0.07.Volatility is low, so traders are not expecting big moves in the stock. Now, assume implied volatility rises to 50%. Suddenly, traders ARE expecting a big move
2025-04-19“Derivatives” as a mathematical concept, hence the reason why Futures & Options are referred to as ‘Derivatives’ ☺.You may be interested to know there is a parallel trading universe out there where traders apply derivative calculus to find trading opportunities day in and day out. In the trading world, such traders are generally called ‘Quants’, quite a fancy nomenclature I must say. Quantitative trading is what really exists on the other side of this mountain called ‘Markets’.From my experience, understanding the 2nd order derivative such as Gamma is not an easy task, although we will try and simplify it as much as possible in the subsequent chapters.Key takeaways from this chapterFinancial derivatives are called Financial derivatives because of its dependence on calculus and differential equations (generally called Derivatives)Delta of an option is a variable and changes for every change in the underlying and premiumGamma captures the rate of change of delta, it helps us get an answer for a question such as “What is the expected value of delta for a given change in underlying”Delta is the 1st order derivative of premiumGamma is the 2nd order derivative of premium

2025-04-17Particularly good 18-month stretch led to returns of over 200%:Like other swing trading services, Mindful Trader's win rate is just above 50%. But, because its average win is larger than its average loss, the service can be quite profitable.Eric is transparent about his results and doesn't make false promises. He also genuinely cares about his members, which isn't the case for many services in this space.Altogether, Mindful Trader is an excellent alert service for beginner options traders.3. Best for large accounts: Delta OptionsOverall rating: Strategy: Momentum tradingCost: $119/month or $949/yearDelta Options is a momentum-based options picking service that takes a unique approach. The team follows a typical momentum strategy by finding stocks that are outperforming their industries, then ensures their stock price increases are justified by increasing fundamentals. Once a stock passes those tests (and a few other qualitative measures), it becomes a candidate for the portfolio. However, unlike typical momentum services which simply buy stocks, Delta Options then buys deep-in-the-money call options on these stocks. Each option has an expiration date at least 1 year into the future. These contracts simulate owning regular shares but require significantly less capital. For example, AAPL is trading at $220 per share at the time of this writing, while the $180 call expiring January 16, 2026 is trading for $59.30. With a delta of 0.85, buying this call is similar to owning 85 shares of Apple, which would cost $18,700 if you were to buy its stock. The call option costs just $5,930.The built-in leverage of options can increase the returns, assuming the right stocks are selected. The website boasts returns of nearly 10x the S&P 500 since the service's inception:On the flip side, the built-in leverage can also create quite a bit of volatility. This is not a strategy for small accounts. The team typically holds positions for 1-3 years, depending on how the underlying stock is performing relative to its peer group. Delta Options normally sends 1-2 new trade alerts per month.4. Best for swing trading: The Trading AnalystOverall rating: Strategy: Swing tradingCost: $147/month or $787/yearThe Trading Analyst is a swing trading service that focuses on breakout trades.Their methodology includes finding stocks that have been trading in a consolidated range and then break out from that range on heavy trading volume.According to their site, this strategy has a relatively low win rate of 52.7%, but its average win of $4,324 is much larger than its average loss of $2,603.This disproportionate profit factor has led its model portfolio to increase from $100,000 to $771,000 since July 2018.Given their win rate of ~53%, you should expect to lose money frequently. If you can't handle losses, you should choose another service with a different strategy. If you can stomach the frequent losses, this is an easy service to follow. The service sends just 2–5 alerts per week via email, text, or Telegram Messenger, allowing you to easily take most trades they post without missing any.5.
