I think one of the best unsung features of Helix Native is DAW automation control. You can use it to fine-tune your guitar sounds to flow with your song compositions and mixes. For example, automate the gain and volume of your amp so they increase during choruses; switch on distortion, reverb, or delay blocks during leads; or draw in automation for wah or volume pedal positions to fit your tune perfectly. You can then tweak your automation while your mixing until its right where you want it. Helix Native even uses automatic "preservation" for automation assignments, which intelligently re-assigns stuff if you decide to change, say, an amp or a distortion pedal, so you don't have to re-do your automation. While Helix Native doesn’t support direct MIDI control (yet, but it will soon), automation is more powerful and useful, and it works like a champ. If you haven’t tried it, you really should. Most major DAWs support plug-in automation (I know for sure Logic, Pro Tools, and Reaper do, and I can’t imagine any competitive DAW not supporting it.) Read the section in your Helix Native guide (currently on page 30) “The Automation/Controller Assign Tab.†It explains how to assign any Helix knob or switch (in any block) to an automation controller number (up to 16 knobs and 16 switches). Then, in your DAW, you can use those knob and switch numbers to create automation lanes along your song’s time line. You’ll need to check your DAW documentation on how to do that, its different for each DAW. You basically use your mouse or a controller to draw in your automation, and select points where effects should turn on/off.Beyond the documentation, there is at least one Youtube video demonstrating how to automate Helix, and its right here. The guy is using Reaper. The video’s a bit long so if you’re in a hurry just watch the first part where he explains how to set up Helix Native’s controller assignments and use them in the DAW, then fast forward to the end to hear how the DAW automation controls Helix Native during the song.. Music streaming service FAQs iFi Audio What is lossless audio?Lossless audio formats enable listeners to hear the full range of an original music recording without any drop in quality due to compression. Some music streaming services, like Spotify and YouTube Music, only offer plans that let you listen to songs in "lossy" audio formats. This means that some of the original audio recording's quality is sacrificed to compress the track in order to make the file smaller and easier to stream. Though this makes listening to music on a slow internet connection possible, lossy digital audio isn't equal to the quality you'd hear on a CD.This loss in quality can be hard to notice for the average listener, but audiophiles prefer "lossless" music since it preserves the full range of the original track. Different platforms brand their lossless audio plans under different names, including HiFi and HD Music. These terms all generally refer to streaming audio tracks that are presented in at least CD quality. Some services even offer formats that deliver high-resolution, lossless audio that exceeds CD quality. The voiced TH and the unvoiced TH are two of the most difficult sounds for many of our adult ESL students because these rare phonemes simply don’t exist in many languages. /θ/ is even rarer than /ð/. Imagine going your entire life never making a specific sound and then being required to! So, how can we help our students improve their TH pronunciation outside of oral drills (which definitely have their place and are very useful, but something you already know about)? Let’s get going with five TH-pronunciation activities perfect for adult ESL!Make TH listening labyrinths.Play minimal pair bingo.Treat them to the thrilling tongue twister tournament.Use YouTube videosRead more about adult ESL pronunciation!Make TH listening labyrinths. The listening labyrinth is of my favorite TH-pronunciation activities to check students’ ability to hear /θ/ vs. /s/ or /θ/ vs. /t/. This minimal pairs activity is easy to make, but don’t expect to make one in under five minutes! If you don’t have the time to follow the step-by-step instructions, but if you want one for/θ/ vs. /s/ or perhaps /θ/ vs. /t/, that activity is included in the resource packets I have available on TpT. A listening labyrinth should be one of your go-to informal assessments of students’ ability to discern the difference between two sounds.Hide your mouth! No, there’s nothing stuck between your teeth, but your students will naturally look at your mouth while they are listening to you speak. When you are doing any type of auditory discrimination exercise with them, and they can see the tip of your tongue between your teeth, they’ll know you weren’t making an /s/ sound even if they couldn’t hear the /θ/ sound. With your mouth hidden behind a sheet of paper while speaking during TH-pronunciation activities, they’ll have to rely on their ears, not their eyes, to know if you are making that tricky /th/ sound. In the age of the pandemic (we really can’t call it a year, can we?), it’s understandable that we might not want to encourage anything that is likely to result in saliva being sprayed into the air we breathe. Even those of us who have been making the /θ/ and /ð/ sounds our entire lives can sometimes accidentally, erm, moisten the air, when saying a TH-word. Now imagine coaching a class full of students to actually stick the tip of their tongue between their teeth and expel air. I sometimes wanted an umbrella when all I had to worry about was a cold. So, modeling covering your mouth for this /th/ practice and encouraging students to do the sameCan t hear people speaking, but they can hear me. Discord
