( – capable either to transform a raster image to CNC commands or to manage with g-code files directly.Additionally I recommend:Inkscape ( – vector graphics editor with g-code generation plugins available (though I could not made them working properly);DXF2GCODE ( – converts dxf files to g-code. Many CAD programs support dxf files.Working with LaserGRBLBefore doing anything with our toy it is necessary to define an important parameter in GRBL: number of steps per millimeter along X and Y axes. Connect ARDUINO board through «Grbl» >«Connect», then select «Grbl» > «Grbl configuration» (Fig. 14).As the initial value we can calculate: n = N*R / (π*D),where N = 64 – number of steps per 1 round for 28byj-48stepper;R ≈ 64 – ratio for reducer of 28byj-48 stepper;D – diameter of belt pulley, mm (12mm in my case). After the first test burning the initial value was altered to 103, 476 step/mm. After all changes has been made hit the «Write» button to download new data into microcontroller’s memory. Final step: laser focusing. As it is stated in the official documentation ( PWM is set by the command M3 SXXX, where XXX – number from 0 to 255 (i.e. 0 – minimal and255 – maximal power). To focus the laser we do not need the maximal power so just type, for example, M3 S10 in the special field in LaserGRBL (Fig. 15).We get a weak but visible light spot which then can be adjusted to the minimal size using ring on the module.Send M5 command when it is done. Now our toy is ready to burn.Open raster image in LaserGRBL:«File» > «Open File» (Fig. 16). I used logo of Faculty of Rocket and Space Engineering( of National Aerospace University «Kharkiv Aviation Institute».Process the image with filters available in LaserGRBL (Fig. 17). The description of all settings can be found at the official website of the program.Click «Next» and define Engraving speed, Laser options, Offsets and Sizes of the image (Fig. 18).After hitting «Create!» button we get visualization of laser trajectories. Since there are no end stops, before burn something, check twice the position of the laser module (its current position is marked as «plus»). To adjust the position a pad in the left bottom corner and «Set New Zero» button should be used (Fig. 19).Select «File» > «Send To Machine» and enjoy the process. It may take hours depending on line density, image size. And do not forget about how slow our steppers are. After several tests on plywood I thought it would be nice to have a logo on phone’s rear cover (Fig. 20).The video of engraving process:

A go-to for budget-friendly laser engravers. Its interface is simple, and you can quickly load G-code files or use its built-in tools to tweak settings like laser speed and power.Where It ExcelsIf you’re dipping your toes into laser engraving and just need basic functionality, LaserGRBL is like that one friend who always shows up with pizza – simple, reliable, and satisfying.DownsidesWhile it’s great for straightforward tasks, it’s not equipped with built-in design tools. You’ll need external software to create designs, making it less convenient than LightBurn’s all-in-one approach.2. Inkscape (With Plugins): The Creative PowerhouseInkscape isn’t a dedicated laser cutting machine software, but it’s a mighty vector design tool with potential when paired with laser plugins like J Tech Photonics.Features and StrengthsInkscape is free, open-source, and excellent for creating complex vector designs. With the right plugins, it can convert your designs into laser-friendly formats and control your machine.Where It ExcelsIf your primary focus is design and you don’t mind a bit of a learning curve, Inkscape offers professional-level features without the professional-level price. It’s ideal for users who already have separate laser control software.DownsidesIt’s not a dedicated laser engraver program, and the workflow can feel clunky. Plugins aren’t always seamless, and troubleshooting them can sometimes feel like defusing a bomb with a butter knife.3. T2Laser: The Pragmatic OptionT2Laser is a low-cost, versatile alternative to LightBurn that balances functionality and affordability.Features and StrengthsThis software supports GRBL-based machines, with capabilities for engraving, cutting, and working with raster and vector files. It’s user-friendly and doesn’t require a subscription.Where It ExcelsT2Laser is perfect for hobbyists who want more functionality than LaserGRBL but don’t need the advanced features of LightBurn.DownsidesThe interface feels a bit dated – think of it as Windows XP compared to LightBurn’s sleek macOS-like vibe. Also, it lacks DSP controller support, which limits its use with high-end machines.4. EZCAD: The Industrial HeavyweightEZCAD isn’t trying to be cute or friendly. This software means business, particularly in the realm of fiber lasers and high-precision tasks.Features and StrengthsKnown for its precision and reliability, EZCAD is often bundled with industrial-grade laser systems. It’s particularly strong for engraving on metals and marking applications.Where It ExcelsIf you’re running a professional laser engraving business, EZCAD is the heavyweight champion you want in your corner.DownsidesIts interface is about as user-friendly as an algebra textbook. Plus, it lacks the design versatility of LightBurn, making it less suitable for creative projects.LaserGRBL vs. LightBurn: A Head-to-Head ComparisonIf LaserGRBL and LightBurn were contestants in a laser software reality show, they’d both shine in their own ways. But which one’s the better fit for you? Let’s break it down.1. Ease of UseLaserGRBLImagine opening a microwave and pressing “start.” That’s about how easy LaserGRBL is to use. Its stripped-down interface is intuitive for basic engraving tasks, making it ideal for beginners.LightBurnLightBurn takes a bit more effort to master, but the payoff is worth it. Its all-in-one design and control capabilities make it a dream once you get the hang of it. It’s like learning to drive stick
