I am unsure where the name originated, but it is listed in Some Waterfalls, Shoals, and Cascades in Oconee County, South Carolina, and in Upstate Hikes of South Carolina. This waterfall looks its best after a period of heavy rain.Parking: Going north on Highway 28, turn left onto Whetstone Road. In approximately .7 mile, turn left onto Cassidy Bridge Road. Drive for approximately 6.7 miles, and turn left onto Double Branch Road. Go to the end of the road and park, GPS 34.77554, -83.22411. This is also an option for parking for Upper Joney Woodall Falls.Hike: Begin the hike down the steep path to the Chauga River, and head right, following the fishermen’s paths along the river. Once you reach where the tributary flows into the Chauga, head upstream. There is no trail to the falls. Experience with map reading and off-trail hiking is recommended. The hike is approximately 1.2 miles round trip.This scenic drop is immediately below the falls:

Oconee County councilmen tried to allay fear among local Latinos that a provision of federal law won’t produce illegal immigrant sweeps such as those begun elsewhere in the U-S. But as one woman yelled out to the county fathers: “We are scared.” After taking public comment, Council Chairman Durham explained his thinking about the DEI prohibitions he supports in ordinance 2025-05 (and his comments are being aired on 101.7 WGOG NEWS). Councilman Don Mize chimed in on Durham’s remarks and addressed Section 287 (g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act and opined that it’s not going to lead to Oconee posse roundups of suspected illegal immigrants. Mize referred to the announcement yesterday by Alan Wilson, South Carolina attorney general, that he has sent a letter to the state’s 46 county sheriffs encouraging them to work with “ICE” – U-S Immigration and Customs Enforcement – efforts in their counties. According to Wilson, it’s a voluntary partnership that’ll authorize designated officers “to perform limited immigration enforcement functions within their own jurisdictions.” Oconee Sheriff Crenshaw says his office has started the process. --> tagged with Featured, News

Published February 18, 2025 8:32am EST Search for missing man continues at Lake Oconee Volunteer search crews and dogs spent another day at Lake Oconee to continue the days-long search for Westminster Schools coach and teacher, Gary Jones. He disappeared on February 8 after he was seen on a small fishing boat with his fiancée, who was found dead a day after they went missing. PUTNAM COUNTY, Ga. - Volunteer search teams and cadaver dogs are expected to return Tuesday to Lake Oconee in a continued search for Westminster Schools coach and teacher Gary Jones, who has been missing since Feb. 8. Jones was last seen on a small fishing boat with his fiancée, Jocelyn Wilson, a math instructor at Spelman College. The couple was celebrating his 50th birthday when they disappeared. Joycelyn Wilson What we know: So far, search crews have recovered Jones’ shoes, a hotel room key card, his wallet, and his driver’s license. On Feb. 9, the day after the couple went missing, Wilson’s body was found in the water near the location where Jones' shoes were discovered. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills says Wilson had air in her lungs when she was recovered and was found with her phone in her hand. Investigators say the couple had checked into a hotel at Lake Oconee before heading directly to the lake. Approximately two hours later, boaters discovered an empty boat idling on the water.
