The Army has been engaged in Arctic training in Alaska, preparing troops to fight in subzero weather. The challenging environment forces soldiers to innovate and adjust in real time while war-gaming.The exercises are unlike anything else in the Army, top generals and commanders said.In the early morning, just as the sun slowly rises up from behind the mountains, gusts of icy wind sweep across the US Army camp, whipping up snow from the ground and the trees in the surrounding forests. It's a bone-chilling cold, one felt even through any protective layers or garments.Soldiers come and go in and out of tents, some surprisingly wearing just T-shirts, seemingly unbothered by the conditions. One sits outside eating breakfast. The temperature of 6 degrees Fahrenheit is practically spring weather, they say. Just a week before, it was minus 40 degrees, a temperature many have never had to endure.Out on the snow-covered Alaskan tundra, US Army Pacific is pushing its soldiers to prepare to fight in subzero temperatures and hostile, unpredictable environments. It's a challenge unlike anything else in the Army, top generals told Business Insider, and a relatively new training experience that tests "the mettle of the human," one brigade-combat-team commander said.Earlier this month, USARPAC held its annual Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center training exercise near Fairbanks, Alaska, which BI was able to observe firsthand.Throughout the training, soldiers with the US Army's 11th Airborne Division and troops from over a dozen international allies and partners ran war-games in the Arctic, with one side. When I was a kid, a treehouse to me was a few pieces of lumber nailed to a tree that was most likely going to cause a severe injury in the near future when it fell apart. Now-a-days, tree houses have progressed to a state that looks like you're living in the future. We've already featured the raindrop shaped tree tent, as well as the elevated mini cabin. Play with. Playground was very disappointing! I would come back but I would be more than happy to try other RV Parks. The location of the campground is great. Close to Empire and Glen Arbor. Campground is well maintained and office staff is friendly. However, the “backroads” sites are very close together. Disappointing for the cost. This place gets ZERO stars (but it won’t let me). It’s a parking lot with trees. I will NEVER COME BACK. This place is awful.Very nice, well taking care of.The spaces are tight unless you get into the back rows set back sites. This is a terrific way to solve the tight spacing. The staff is great. The bathrooms are clean and the pool is decent. Lots of trees. Will likely be returning. This campground has two sides, the campground which accommodates tents, campers and RVs. Also they have small cabins. They offer full hookups as well as 30 & 50 amp service. Nice shower and bathroom facilities, coin laundry, pool, and camp store. The other side is the “luxury RV Resort” with concrete pads, grass, ponds and lots of greenery. Very upscale. This is one of my favorite campgrounds and it’s located in our favorite vacation destination! We have stayed here several times with our extended family on sites near us and can’t wait to go back again. It’s dog friendly and the staff is always helpful and friendly too. The location is close to many nearby attractions, M22, outdoor adventures, beaches, lake, boating rentals, rivers, restaurants, wineries, quaint lakeside towns. The sites, bathrooms and pool are clean. They spray for bugs so there’s not too many creepy crawlies or biting bugs in the campground. Plus there’s no poison ivy!My husband and I have always preferred the quiet laid back feeling of state park camping but since purchasing a 40ft 5th wheel we have found ourselves looking at private campgrounds to accommodate its size. Indigo Bluffs provides the perfect combination of space and tranquility. Plenty of trees, large sites, friendly staff, and convenient location will bring us back! This campground is cheap and easy to access. It has

Elite OSMO, or see our Best Backpacking Tents guide for more recommendations. Also note, hammock hanging from Joshua Trees and junipers is prohibited, according to the Park Website, so hammocking is not a good option.BACKPACKWe needed a backpack that could handle the heavier loads from the longer water carries on the CRHT. I carried the Six Moon Designs Swift X Backpack because it can comfortably carry big water carries and fits my cooler weather backpacking gear. You can read our in-depth review of the Swift X or see our Best Backpacking Backpacks guide for recommendations on lightweight packs designed for comfortably carrying bigger water carries.SLEEPING BAGOur group of three hikers used a variety of lightweight and regular sleeping bags on this trip. Ultimately, we all wished we had carried a warmer sleeping bag than we did for our December/January trip. It's easy to forget that even though the desert gets hot during the day, it often gets below freezing at night, especially in the winter. See our Best Sleeping Bags story for more recommendations.SLEEPING PADOur group had the same issue with our sleeping pads. We opted for minimalist choices, and all wished we had brought a sleeping pad with more insulation for backpacking in the winter. See our Best Backpacking Sleeping Pads story for more recommendations.TREKKING POLESThe CRHT has a few miles with climbing and rockier sections of trails, so we appreciated having hiking poles. Some of us also used our trekking poles to hold up our lightweight tents. See our Best Trekking poles story for more. COOKING SYSTEMA backpacker could easily hike this trail stoveless, but I enjoyed having hot food at night. Especially since I backpacked the CRHT during the winter, making hot food at night warmed me up and gave me something to do when it got dark at 5 pm. As with the tent, we discovered having windproof gear was essential in Joshua Tree. I carried the SOTO WindMaster and that was an excellent choice. See our Best Backpacking Stoves story for more recommendations. In addition to carrying a Cooking Pot to boil water, I also brought

Tents. This should not pose difficulties with site selection, as it is still smaller than almost every 2P tent (which are widely used everywhere). Trekking pole tents do have a bit larger footprint than freestanding tents because freestanding tents can steepen the sidewalls to trim the edges, plus many mainstream freestanding tents are quite tiny. So certainly there are tents with smaller footprints but X-Mid is very similar to any other reasonably spacious 1P tent and smaller than almost every 2P tent. There is a trade off here between the amount of space and footprint size, where we think providing a comfortable amount of space is the right approach because it benefits you every night, whereas only on rare occasions is the bit larger footprint a small inconvenience. The X-Mid is one of the most popular tents on the Appalachian Trail where smaller campsites are common, which shows that this is not a substantial issue even in areas with limited sites. Both tents are very capable and versatile. The regular version has the advantages of being 1 oz lighter, a bit less expensive, and the mesh inner enables stargazing at night. The solid inner version has the advantages of greater protection against rough weather and it is slightly warmer. Most people will be well suited with either style, but we recommend the mesh for people who like stargazing or camping in very hot areas (who might be too warm in the solid version) while the solid inner version is recommended for people who plan for regular use in poor weather, shoulder season and winter conditions. There are tents with traditional poles that are as light as the X-Mid. Since pole sets are heavy (often about 8oz) to get a freestanding tents this light something else has to give. Commonly that’s
