Thankfully Epic chose not to use Windows Live for it's online and stuck with good ol' Gamespy.If they had chosen Live then...well...There would be even less players online for one. You can now download a pre-alpha version of Epic’s free Unreal Tournament refresh, though it’s not quite official.Earlier in the year, Epic Games announced that it was working on a new version of the classic online multiplayer shooter that kicked it all off for the developer, Unreal Tournament.A small team of Unreal Tournament veterans, made up of UT developers, fans, and Unreal Engine 4 developers, has been working on the open source project. The result will be a completely free to play version of the seminal shooter for PC, Mac, and Linux.Because of the aforementioned open source nature of this project, it’s now possible to play an early pre-alpha version of the game. You see, anyone with an Unreal Engine subscription can access the current build, and such ones can compile a working, downloadable version of the game.That’s exactly what’s happened. Head on over to the ut.rushbase website and you can download a working version of Unreal Tournament.It should be restated that this is an extremely early version of the game – “So early it’s technically not even pre alpha, it’s debug code,” according to the associated Readme file.Still, if you can’t wait to whip out your Flak Cannon and party like it’s 1999, give it a whirl at your own risk.Along with Quake 3, Unreal Tournament was responsible for setting the template for and popularising online competitive first person shooters. Maxine K. signed just now Adam B. signed just now Fans of Unreal Tournament on Dreamcast have been trying for a while to find a way to bring back Unreal Tournament online since it got offline in 2003, only 2 years after the game got released.We, the signers of this petition, ask Epic and Secret Level to release the dedicated server software for the Dreamcast version to the public.Because the PC game even got its source code released.Because the game got offline so quickly that most gamers felt frustrated not being able to enjoy this game online for a longer while.Because we are fans of that game and wish to be able to play it online again.In the event that Epic and Secret Level can't release the dedicated server software for legal reasons, we ask them to help us by giving us enough informations to allow us to convert the PC's version dedicated server software to one able to allow Dreamcast users to play Unreal Tournament online again.We'd like to thanks Epic and Secret Level for their awesome port of an awesome game, and support them with their projects as fans of their work.Thanks to all of you who signed as well!Make sure as many as possible Dreamcast fans of Unreal Tournament sign here!

On the other hand, the single-player game in Unreal Tournament was much more fulfilling, and the challenge missions at the end were just bad ass. Just the sheer number of game types alone in Unreal Tournament puts it leaps and bounds above the competition. In its defense, deathmatch still seems to be the preferred method of online multiplay, and Quake III does do it the best, but that's about all it does -- okay, deathmatch and capture the flag. Unreal Tournament has these plus two more ways to play. Just give gamers a chance to get used to some of the incredibly innovative game types in Unreal Tournament -- like assault -- and we certainly see the face of online shooters changing. Lookin' Good and Knowin' It Graphically both games are brilliant, and there's not much to complain about in either. After seeing Unreal last year, we all knew UT would be vibrant, colorful, and sport enough lighting effects to pass as a first-rate Fourth of July celebration in most towns. And while Quake III may be dark and gray, it still has some of the best texture's we've ever seen in a game, FPS or not. Plus the variety and quality of the character models in QIII just can't be beat. Like the bot AI, this is a hard one to name a definite winner, but we have to give a slight edge to Arena.
